La diversità delle specie svolge un ruolo importante nelle funzioni e nei servizi degli ecosistemi. Il Nepal possiede una diversità di flora e fauna sproporzionatamente elevata a livello genetico, di specie ed ecosistemico grazie alla sua posizione geografica unica e alle variazioni altitudinali. Nonostante gli sforzi compiuti in passato in Nepal per preservarla, la biodiversità continua a diminuire e a degradarsi. Tra le molte cause potenziali, questo studio si propone di indagare gli effetti di un progetto stradale sulla biodiversità nelle Middle Hills del Nepal. Le informazioni sulla composizione floristica sono state raccolte nelle foreste comunitarie adiacenti utilizzando un gruppo di 30 parcelle circolari, ciascuna situata a 50 m e 20 m dal bordo della strada. I risultati dimostrano che i progetti stradali rurali contribuiscono alla riduzione della biodiversità, probabilmente a causa della rimozione delle specie legnose a basso rendimento vicino al bordo della strada. Lo studio suggerisce inoltre che la vicinanza al bordo della strada riduce la vegetazione del sottobosco, rendendo la foresta meno in grado di mantenere la sua biodiversità originaria. Tuttavia, le operazioni selvicolturali hanno il potenziale per ridurre al minimo la perdita indiretta di biodiversità causata dai progetti stradali.
