Gli effluenti dei mattatoi vengono scaricati in modo non regolamentato nel fiume Katsina-Ala, in Nigeria. Gli effetti fisico-chimici e batteriologici degli effluenti sulla qualità delle acque superficiali del fiume sono stati identificati utilizzando metodi analitici standard. I risultati ottenuti sono stati confrontati con gli standard massimi stabiliti dalle agenzie di regolamentazione, dall’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità (OMS) e dal Ministero Federale dell’Ambiente della Nigeria. Sebbene la maggior parte dei parametri rientrasse nei limiti stabiliti, alcuni superavano i limiti massimi, rendendo il fiume Katsina-Ala leggermente inquinato. Gli effluenti dei mattatoi hanno contribuito ad alterare l’equilibrio fisico-chimico e batteriologico del fiume. Si suggerisce di trattare gli effluenti del mattatoio prima di scaricarli nel fiume per ridurre i rischi ambientali e sanitari. Per uno sviluppo sostenibile, i corpi idrici dovrebbero essere trattati come entità preziose per il nostro benessere. L’acqua sembra essere abbondante, ma è un bene che fa paura.
