A água subterrânea é a principal fonte de água para os palestinianos. A qualidade da água subterrânea pode deteriorar-se ao longo do tempo devido aos efeitos cumulativos de vários anos de práticas. O trabalho deste livro centrou-se na identificação e avaliação dos impactos potenciais das fossas sépticas nos poços de água subterrânea no distrito de Tulkarm. Foi desenvolvido um modelo de rastreamento de partículas utilizando MODPATH e foram elaborados diferentes cenários para delinear as áreas que contribuem para a contaminação de cada poço de interesse. Os resultados confirmam que as fossas sépticas são consideradas uma das principais fontes de poluição para muitos poços de água subterrânea na área de estudo. Foi delineada uma zona de proteção da cabeça do poço para poços de água subterrânea selecionados na área de estudo, a fim de chegar a um plano de gestão eficaz para minimizar o risco de contaminação da água subterrânea. No geral, as recomendações apelam a todas as autoridades relevantes para que assumam as suas responsabilidades e tomem medidas imediatas para controlar e, se possível, prevenir a contaminação da água subterrânea.
