Actinomyceten sind aerobe, grampositive, filamentöse Bakterien mit hohem G+C-Gehalt (Guanin + Cytosin), die asexuelle Sporen bilden und sowohl in terrestrischen als auch in aquatischen Lebensräumen weit verbreitet sind. Sie sind die Hauptquelle für klinisch wichtige Antibiotika, von denen die meisten zu komplex sind, um mittels kombinatorischer Chemie synthetisiert zu werden. L-Glutaminase ist ein von verschiedenen Mikroorganismen produziertes Enzym, das zur Behandlung von Leukämie, als Geschmacksverstärker und als Enzymsensor eingesetzt wird. Obwohl L-Glutaminase-Aktivität bei verschiedenen Mikroorganismen beschrieben wurde, ist L-Glutaminase aus Actinomyceten sehr selten. Mangroven sind ein äußerst produktives und noch weitgehend unerforschtes Ökosystem, das etwa ein Viertel der weltweiten Küstenlinie bedeckt und eine hohe Vielfalt an gedeihenden Organismen aufweist. In jüngster Zeit hat die Rate der Isolierung neuartiger bioaktiver Verbindungen aus Mikroorganismen in Mangrovenwäldern enorm zugenommen. Die vorliegende Studie hob die Mangrovenumgebung als potenzielle Quelle für effiziente L-Glutaminase produzierende Actinomyceten hervor. Die Produktion von L-Glutaminase durch sowohl Wild- als auch Mutantenstämme in Feststofffermentation wurde untersucht. Die Fermentationsbedingungen wurden zur Maximierung der Enzymproduktion optimiert.
