As crianças com perda auditiva são equipadas com aparelhos auditivos ou implantes cocleares para melhorar a facilidade e a extensão com que podem aceder e adquirir a linguagem falada. O teste de compreensão lexical em Telugu consistia em 4 níveis para avaliar a compreensão da criança de palavras individuais, combinações simples de palavras e situações em que a compreensão de palavras funcionais é essencial. Também avaliava morfemas gramaticais e frases elaboradas e estruturas de frases. Os resultados indicaram que as capacidades de compreensão lexical das crianças que utilizam dispositivos bimodais e implantes cocleares unilaterais apresentam melhorias significativas no desenvolvimento lexical, mas parecem ter dificuldades nas capacidades gramaticais. Pode concluir-se que as crianças que recebem um implante precocemente, seguido de um período de reabilitação adequado, atingem capacidades de compreensão que excedem os níveis observados em crianças com aparelhos auditivos. As crianças que utilizam implantes cocleares, tal como as crianças com audição típica, atingiram um padrão relativamente previsível de crescimento linguístico com desenvolvimentos simultâneos no vocabulário, na gramática e nas construções sintácticas, à medida que as suas capacidades auditivas ultrapassam as dos seus pares não implantados.
