Les enfants malentendants sont équipés d’appareils auditifs ou d’implants cochléaires afin d’améliorer la facilité et l’étendue de leur accès et de leur acquisition de la langue parlée. Le test de compréhension lexicale en telugu comporte quatre niveaux pour évaluer la compréhension par l’enfant de mots individuels, de combinaisons de mots simples et de situations où la compréhension de mots fonctionnels est essentielle. Il évalue également les morphèmes grammaticaux, les phrases élaborées et les structures de phrases. Les résultats indiquent que les capacités de compréhension lexicale des enfants utilisant des appareils bimodaux et des implants cochléaires unilatéraux montrent des améliorations significatives dans le développement lexical, mais semblent avoir des difficultés avec les capacités grammaticales. On peut conclure que les enfants qui reçoivent un implant tôt, suivi d’une période de rééducation appropriée, atteignent des capacités de compréhension qui dépassent les niveaux observés chez les enfants équipés d’appareils auditifs. Les enfants utilisant des implants cochléaires comme les enfants entendants typiques ont atteint un modèle relativement prévisible de croissance du langage avec des développements simultanés du vocabulaire, de la grammaire et des constructions syntaxiques au fur et à mesure que leurs capacités auditives dépassent celles de leurs camarades non-implantés.
