A couve-brinjal (Solanum melongena L.), também conhecida como planta do ovo, pertence à família Solanaceae. É uma das culturas hortícolas mais populares e principais cultivadas na Índia e noutras partes do mundo. Para além da sua utilização como legume fresco, o brinjal tem um bom valor medicinal. É uma fonte rica de vitamina A, tiamina, riboflavina, ácido nicotínico, vitamina C e elementos minerais como o ferro, o cálcio e o fósforo. A brinjal é uma planta de clima quente que requer 100-140 dias a partir da fase de plântula para produzir frutos. As beringelas crescem melhor a uma temperatura diurna de 25,50 C e a uma temperatura nocturna de 200C. A cultura é amplamente cultivada em regiões tropicais e subtropicais, com uma produção mundial de 34.485.056 toneladas numa área de cerca de 2.044.803 hectares (Anon., 2010). Na Índia, ocupa uma área de cerca de 680 000 hectares, produzindo mais de 11896,0 toneladas de frutos. Em Karnataka, ocupa uma área de 14.200 hectares com uma produção de 8,1 MT (Anon., 2010).
