O grão-de-bico (Cicer arietinum L.), um importante legume, é uma boa fonte de hidratos de carbono e proteínas. O Sclerotium rolfsii é um patógeno do solo que causa a doença da podridão do colo no grão-de-bico, resultando em perdas significativas de rendimento. No presente estudo, fungicidas químicos e biomassa seca de Melia azedarach e Azadirachta indica foram utilizados para controlar a doença da podridão do colo do grão-de-bico. Os fungicidas tebuconazol, mencozeb e tiofanato metílico provaram ser muito eficazes contra o patógeno fúngico. Em bioensaios antifúngicos in vitro, diferentes concentrações (0, 0,5, 1,0, ..., 3,5%) de extratos metanólicos de folhas e frutos de M. azedarach e extrato de folhas de A. indica reduziram a biomassa fúngica em 92-94%, 81-84% e 86-90%, respetivamente. Foram realizadas experiências in vivo em vasos de plástico contendo cada um 1 kg de solo franco-arenoso. O solo dos vasos foi corrigido com biomassa de folhas secas de M. azedarach e A. indica a 1, 2 e 3% p/p. As correções do solo reduziram significativamente a mortalidade das plantas devido ao S. rolfsii e aumentaram o crescimento das culturas. Este livro é muito útil para aqueles que se interessam por agricultura biológica.
