Cykl hydrologiczny ulega dzikim wahaniom ze względu na produkcję gazów cieplarnianych, które powodują zmiany w intensywności, czasie trwania i częstotliwości opadów.Określenie potencjalnych skutków zmian klimatu i ich zaaklimatyzowanie jest sposobem na zmniejszenie podatności regionów na te zmiany. Ponieważ charakterystyki opadów są często wykorzystywane do planowania i projektowania różnych projektów dotyczących zasobów wodnych. Niezbędne jest dokonanie przeglądu i aktualizacji charakterystyk opadów dla przyszłych sytuacji klimatycznych. Celem niniejszej pracy było stworzenie nowych krzywych IDF dla zlewni Upper Nyabarongo przy użyciu formuły redukcji empirycznej Indyjskiego Departamentu Meteorologicznego (IMD). Do opracowania krzywych i równań IDF wykorzystano metodę rozkładu wartości ekstremalnych Umbela. Stwierdzono, że intensywność opadów maleje wraz z wydłużaniem się czasu ich trwania. Ponadto, opad o danym czasie trwania będzie miał większe natężenie, jeśli jego okres powrotu będzie duży. Innymi słowy, dla opadu o danym czasie trwania opady o większym natężeniu w tym czasie są rzadsze niż opady o mniejszym natężeniu.
