A educação é um aspeto importante do processo de desenvolvimento de um país. Foi nesta perspetiva que o conceito de EPT, que fazia parte dos ODM, foi adotado pela maioria dos países africanos, incluindo a República do Congo. Quando este programa foi avaliado a meio do percurso, as elevadas taxas brutas de escolarização pareciam mascarar as deficiências da situação interna do sistema educativo congolês. De facto, a proporção de crianças com atrasos escolares era de 75% em 2005, 43% em 2012 e 36% em 2015. Esta situação gera custos adicionais para os pais dos alunos e afecta negativa e indiretamente o progresso socioeconómico do país (Haramein, 1970). Estas razões conduziram às seguintes questões de investigação: Quais são os factores que explicam o atraso dos alunos do ensino primário na República do Congo? O objetivo geral deste estudo é, portanto, contribuir para a melhoria dos conhecimentos sobre o insucesso escolar no Congo, a fim de ajudar os decisores a tomar medidas para melhorar o desempenho interno do sistema educativo congolês com base em provas científicas.
