Este estudo relata os efeitos sobre as crenças epistemológicas dos professores do primeiro ano de pré-serviço, e sobre as práticas dos professores, da participação num programa de matemática centrado na construção social. Alinhado com princípios socialmente construtivistas, o investigador-professor afirma que crucial no desenvolvimento da posição epistemológica de um professor é a oportunidade para os professores de pré-serviço explorarem e desenvolverem a matemática e a aprendizagem como socialmente construídas. Os principais objectivos do estudo eram contribuir para o conhecimento sobre as compreensões matemáticas dos professores de pré-serviço e a compreensão de como a epistemologia de um indivíduo influencia tanto o ensino como a aprendizagem da matemática, e averiguar as implicações da construção de experiências matemáticas para os aprendentes que são enquadradas por compreensões construtivistas sociais.
