O estudo aborda o desafio persistente de melhorar o ensino da matemática na África do Sul, centrando-se no apoio aos professores externos - aqueles que ensinam matemática sem formação formal ou conhecimento suficiente da matéria. Investiga a Iniciativa de Melhoria do Ensino da Matemática (MTEI), uma ferramenta baseada na comunidade de prática concebida para reforçar os conhecimentos de conteúdo, as competências pedagógicas e as práticas de sala de aula dos professores externos do 9º ano na província de Mpumalanga. Guiado pela teoria da aprendizagem social de Wenger e pela teoria sociocultural de Vygotsky, o estudo utilizou uma conceção sequencial explicativa de métodos mistos envolvendo quatro professores. Os dados foram recolhidos através de pré-avaliações e pós-avaliações, observações de aulas e entrevistas de reflexão. Os resultados mostram que o MTEI melhorou significativamente o conhecimento do conteúdo matemático (MCK), o conhecimento do conteúdo pedagógico (PCK) e as práticas de ensino dos professores. Os professores identificaram as caraterísticas de colaboração e apoio do MTEI como valiosas para o seu crescimento profissional e eficácia do ensino. Em geral, o estudo destaca o potencial da MTEI como um modelo de desenvolvimento profissional sensível ao contexto para professores de matemática fora do campo.
