I metodi convenzionali di valutazione della fertilità del suolo risultano invariabilmente poco accessibili ai piccoli agricoltori, a causa dei costi che comportano, della complessità legata all’interpretazione dei risultati di laboratorio e della pazienza necessaria per ottenere le raccomandazioni richieste. Molte piante, in particolare le erbacce, sono state associate dai piccoli agricoltori al declino della fertilità del suolo. Tuttavia, l’affidabilità di questa percezione non è stata ancora ampiamente verificata. Pertanto, è stato condotto uno studio etno-ecologico su campi coltivati con maggese intermittente su Nitisols nel distretto di Buikwe, nell’Uganda centrale, per stabilire la relazione tra la popolazione di imperata cilindrica (Imperata cylindrica), la combustione dei residui e le proprietà del suolo, e determinare l’affidabilità della specie come indicatore della fertilità del suolo. È difficile discernere se l’Imperata cylindrica, come specie, preferisca abitare su terreni a bassa fertilità o sia semplicemente più competitiva su tali terreni rispetto ad altre specie vegetali, comprese le colture. Si tratta di una questione che merita ulteriori ricerche che prevedano un arricchimento deliberato del suolo con fertilizzanti per eliminare l’aspetto competitivo.
