Les méthodes conventionnelles d’évaluation de la fertilité des sols sont systématiquement peu adaptées aux petits agriculteurs, en raison des coûts qu’elles impliquent, de la complexité liée à l’interprétation des résultats de laboratoire et de la patience nécessaire pour obtenir les recommandations requises. De nombreuses plantes, en particulier les mauvaises herbes, ont été associées par les petits agriculteurs à une baisse de la fertilité des sols. Cependant, la fiabilité de cette perception n’a pas encore été vérifiée de manière approfondie. Ainsi, une étude ethno-écologique a été menée sur des champs en culture avec des jachères intermittentes sur des nitisols dans le district de Buikwe, au centre de l’Ouganda, afin d’établir la relation entre la population d’Imperata cylindrica, le brûlage des résidus et les propriétés du sol, et de déterminer la fiabilité de cette espèce en tant qu’indicateur de la fertilité des sols. Il est difficile de déterminer si l’herbe à épée, en tant qu’espèce, préfère les sols de faible fertilité ou si elle est simplement plus compétitive sur ces sols que d’autres espèces végétales, y compris les cultures. Cette question mérite des recherches supplémentaires impliquant un enrichissement délibéré du sol avec des engrais afin d’éliminer l’aspect compétitif.
