Cananga Odorata, nach seinem Trivialnamen 'Ylang-Ylang', ist eine sehr duftende Pflanze, die zunehmend in Bujumbura, der wirtschaftlichen Hauptstadt Burundis, vor allem in der IMBO-Ebene zu finden ist. Die Extraktion der ätherischen Öle aus den frischen Blüten der Pflanze, die unmittelbar nach der Ernte durch Hydrodestillation erfolgt, ergibt ein ätherisches Öl mit Qualitätsmerkmalen, die den international anerkannten Standards entsprechen. Mit einer Dichte von 0,940, einem Refraktionsindex (IR20) von 1,502 und einem Säureindex von 0,421 entspricht das aus den Blüten dieses Bujumbura-Genotyps gewonnene ätherische Öl vollkommen den AFNOR-Standards. Aber es ist vor allem sein Esterindex (EI) von 350,6, der außergewöhnlich sehr hoch ist und a priori die Entstehung einer Sorte von Cananga odorata mit wettbewerbsfähigen Qualitäten im Vergleich zu den beiden bereits existierenden Nischen, nämlich den Nischen von Comoros-Mayotte und Madagaskar, nahelegt. The extraction and packaging of Cananga odorata essences offers new bioeconomic perspectives in aromatherapy and perfumery, not only in Burundi, but also in countries that share the same geo-climatic conditions of the Great African Rift.
