Este livro baseia-se num trabalho de investigação em Comunicação Profissional Internacional e Intercultural. Apresenta uma descrição das barreiras interculturais que os imigrantes árabes enfrentam quando acedem ao sistema de saúde canadiano em Victoria, na Colúmbia Britânica. O estudo baseou-se em entrevistas individuais (N=25) com imigrantes árabes residentes em Victoria, na Colúmbia Britânica. Os participantes foram selecionados por amostragem em bola de neve da comunidade árabe da Grande Victoria e os dados das entrevistas foram analisados de acordo com a abordagem de análise temática. Os participantes identificaram desafios interculturais e diferenças interculturais entre a prestação de cuidados de saúde canadiana e árabe. As barreiras interculturais mencionadas pelos participantes do estudo são agrupadas em quatro temas: primeiro, a filosofia básica subjacente ao sistema de saúde canadiano; segundo, questões de sensibilidade de género; terceiro, redes de apoio social; e quarto, confiança entre pacientes árabes e médicos canadianos. São solicitadas sugestões dos participantes para melhorar o nível de sensibilidade cultural no sistema de saúde canadiano.
