La sindrome del calice gonfio (ICS), una novità morfologica nelle Solanaceae, è controllata dall’espressione di un gene MADS-box, MPF2-like (WSA206), nei tessuti floreali di Withania. Esplorando la ricca diversità della morfologia del calice nei taxa correlati, si dimostra che la duplicazione del gene MPF2-like nelle Withaninae ha fornito un importante terreno di gioco per nuove innovazioni evolutive. La sub-(neo)funzionalizzazione e la perdita di geni sono state molto importanti, insieme alla selezione darwiniana positiva, nell’evoluzione dell’ICS. La divergenza di espressione nei geni MPF2-like, dovuta alla perdita reciproca di elementi cis-regolatori, si è aggiunta alle variazioni genetiche e fenotipiche e ha aumentato il potenziale della selezione naturale per l’evoluzione adattativa dell’ICS. Inoltre, questi risultati forniscono una visione dell’integrazione delle vie di sviluppo floreale e ormonale nello sviluppo dell’ICS e contribuiscono alla comprensione dell’importanza della poliploidia nelle piante. I risultati qui riportati non solo spiegheranno come la novità del calice si sia formata e mantenuta in queste piante, in modo molto esplicito, ma forniranno anche un bell’esempio di utilizzo di 'mutanti evolutivi' selvatici per analizzare le variazioni di tratti complessi.
