A síndrome do cálice inflado (ICS), uma novidade morfológica em Solanaceae, é controlada pela expressão de um gene MADS-box, MPF2-like (WSA206), nos tecidos florais de Withania. Explorando a rica diversidade da morfologia do cálice nos táxons relacionados, mostra-se que a duplicação do gene MPF2-like em Withaninae proporcionou um importante espaço para inovações evolutivas. A sub (neo)-funcionalização e a perda de genes foram muito importantes em conjunto com a seleção darwiniana positiva na evolução do ICS. A divergência de expressão nos genes do tipo MPF2 devido à perda recíproca de elementos cis-reguladores aumentou as variações genéticas e fenotípicas e reforçou o potencial da seleção natural para a evolução adaptativa do ICS. Além disso, estes resultados permitem compreender a integração das vias de desenvolvimento floral e hormonal no desenvolvimento do ICS e contribuem para a compreensão da importância da poliploidia nas plantas. As descobertas aqui relatadas não só explicarão como a novidade do cálice foi moldada e mantida nessas plantas, de uma maneira muito explícita, mas também fornecerão um bom exemplo do uso de 'mutantes evolutivos' selvagens para dissecar variações complexas de traços.
