Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar os erros no sistema de artigos em inglês cometidos por aprendentes nativos de árabe EFL na Arábia Saudita. O estudo tinha dois objectivos principais: em primeiro lugar, identificar os erros do sistema de artigos em inglês e classificá-los em três tipos - adição, omissão e substituição. Em segundo lugar, atribuir estes erros de artigos à sua possível fonte, interlinguística ou intralinguística, numa tentativa de determinar se o árabe da L1 ou o inglês da L2 desempenham um papel fundamental na utilização incorrecta dos artigos por parte dos alunos de EFL.O estudo envolveu 60 alunos de EFL sauditas do sexo masculino, com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e os 22 anos, inscritos num programa de EFL do ano preparatório numa grande universidade da Arábia Saudita. Os participantes pertenciam a duas áreas, nomeadamente Ciências e Humanidades, com diferentes níveis de proficiência em inglês. Para além disso, foram entrevistados 10 professores de EFL de diferentes nacionalidades e com qualificações de ensino diversas. Estas entrevistas visavam explorar a forma como os professores percepcionavam os erros de artigo dos alunos e as soluções que adoptavam para melhorar a aprendizagem.
