Niniejsze badanie miało na celu zbadanie błędów w angielskim systemie artykułów popełnianych przez rodzimych arabskich uczniów EFL w Arabii Saudyjskiej. Badanie miało dwa główne cele: po pierwsze, zidentyfikowanie błędów w angielskim systemie partykuł i podzielenie ich na trzy typy - dodanie, pominięcie i zastąpienie. Po drugie, przypisanie tych błędów do ich możliwego źródła, czy to międzyjęzykowego, czy wewnątrzjęzykowego, w celu ustalenia, czy L1 arabski lub L2 angielski odegrały kluczową rolę w niewłaściwym użyciu partykuł przez osoby uczące się EFL.W badaniu wzięło udział 60 Saudyjczyków uczących się EFL, w wieku od 18 do 22 lat, zapisanych na rok przygotowawczy programu EFL na dużym uniwersytecie w Arabii Saudyjskiej. Uczestnicy należeli do dwóch strumieni, a mianowicie nauk ścisłych i humanistycznych, o różnym poziomie znajomości języka angielskiego. Dodatkowo przeprowadzono wywiady z 10 nauczycielami EFL różnych narodowości o różnych kwalifikacjach pedagogicznych. Wywiady te miały na celu zbadanie, w jaki sposób nauczyciele postrzegają błędy popełniane przez uczniów w artykułach i jakie rozwiązania przyjęli, aby usprawnić proces uczenia się.
