En raison de la généralisation du traitement biologique des eaux usées municipales dans le monde entier, des millions de tonnes de boues contaminées par des métaux lourds sont produites chaque année. Il s’agit de suspensions concentrées stables en suspension, comprenant des cellules biologiques, leurs métabolites, des substances d’origine naturelle et anthropique, y compris des composés de métaux lourds. Après leur évacuation vers des champs d’épandage occupant de vastes zones suburbaines, les suspensions de boues se transforment en sédiments gélatineux. L’élimination des boues d’épuration est un problème urgent pour l’ensemble de la communauté internationale. Grâce à la présence de macro- et micro-éléments, de micro-organismes utiles, de vitamines, d’acides aminés et de matières organiques, leur utilisation comme engrais après élimination des métaux lourds est la solution la plus rationnelle. Des recherches récentes montrent que ce problème peut être résolu par un processus de lixiviation avec participation de micro-organismes hétérotrophes des boues.
