Qualität bezeichnet im Fertigungskontext den Grad, in dem ein Produkt oder Prozess festgelegten Anforderungen, Kundenerwartungen und gesetzlichen Standards entspricht. Qualität beschränkt sich nicht mehr nur auf die Prüfung von Endprodukten, sondern ist in jeden Aspekt des Produktionslebenszyklus integriert - von der Konstruktion und Beschaffung bis hin zur Montage und Auslieferung. Laut Juran (1999) ist Qualität „Gebrauchstauglichkeit', d. h., ein Produkt muss die vorgesehenen Funktionen unter festgelegten Bedingungen erfüllen. Ähnlich definiert ISO 9000:2015 Qualität als „den Grad, in dem eine Reihe inhärenter Eigenschaften eines Objekts die Anforderungen erfüllt' (ISO, 2015).
