Le diabète sucré est une maladie épidémique majeure et actuelle de l’espèce humaine, impliquée dans de nombreuses manifestations cliniques. La pauvreté qui touche particulièrement l’Afrique montre clairement l’urgence de développer de nouveaux médicaments thérapeutiques bon marché et disponibles. Un certain nombre de graines riches en protéines, telles que celles de la pastèque (Citrullus lanatus), sont couramment utilisées en médecine traditionnelle et leur efficacité contre le diabète sucré est de plus en plus reconnue. Beaucoup de gens mangent la chair de la pastèque et jettent les graines, sans savoir ce qu’ils perdent en termes de valeurs médicinales. Il a été démontré que les extraits de pétrole éther et d’éthanol des graines de pastèque réduisent considérablement le taux de glycémie élevé chez les souris atteintes de diabète induit par l’alloxane. Les résultats ont donc montré que les graines de pastèque ont un certain potentiel en tant que médicament antidiabétique. Il faudrait donc que les gens cessent de jeter les graines lorsqu’ils mangent de la pastèque.
