O quiabo[Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench], um membro da família Malvaceae, é uma cultura anual de legumes de fruto e, com o cromossoma n.º 2n=130, conquistou uma posição de destaque entre os legumes. O quiabo é vulgarmente designado por Gumbo nos EUA, lady’s finger no Reino Unido, Bhindi na Índia e Bhinda em Gujarat. A cultura é originária da África Tropical e foi cultivada pela primeira vez pelos egípcios no século XII d.C. (Thompson e Kelly, 1979). É amplamente cultivada em todas as regiões tropicais e subtropicais do mundo. De acordo com estatísticas recentes, a Índia cultiva quiabo numa área aproximada de 511 lakh hectares, com uma produção anual de 62,5 lakh toneladas métricas, sendo líder mundial. Na Índia, Gujarat é o principal Estado a produzir anualmente cerca de 11,32 lakh toneladas métricas numa área de 0,93 lakh hectares de quiabos (Anon., 2023). É popular entre os produtores de produtos hortícolas de toda a Índia devido à sua adaptabilidade a uma vasta gama de condições de cultivo. A cultura do quiabo requer uma estação de crescimento longa e quente e é suscetível a geadas. A temperatura diurna óptima para o seu melhor crescimento situa-se entre250Ce400Ce a temperatura nocturna é superior a220C.
