O termo 'probiótico' foi definido como 'um suplemento alimentar microbiano vivo, que afecta beneficamente o animal hospedeiro, melhorando o seu equilíbrio microbiano intestinal'. Recentemente, os probióticos desempenham um papel de modificadores do rúmen para melhorar as condições microbianas no rúmen. As propionibactérias são um dos probióticos habitantes naturais do rúmen que constituem 1,4% da microflora ruminal e produzem propionato, um dos principais precursores da produção de glicose pela gluconeogénese hepática, pelo que a alimentação direta com propionibactérias pode ser uma forma natural de aumentar a produção hepática de glicose e influenciar positivamente o metabolismo e a produção.
