È responsabilità della scuola sviluppare l’atteggiamento dei bambini verso la cura dell’ambiente in cui vivono, dando loro l’opportunità di acquisire conoscenze, valori e atteggiamenti che contribuiranno a migliorare la loro qualità di vita. Questo lavoro analizza le pratiche educative e le conoscenze che gli studenti hanno sulla cura dell’ambiente, in particolare del fiume Paquequer a Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro. Il progetto è stato realizzato tra il 2007 e il 2008 presso la scuola municipale Chiquinha Rolla e il target era costituito da studenti del quinto anno della scuola primaria, di età compresa tra i 9 e gli 11 anni. I risultati hanno evidenziato una mancanza di consapevolezza da parte dei residenti locali, degli studenti e dei membri delle famiglie riguardo alla cura dell’ambiente e della propria salute, unita alla mancanza di preparazione da parte degli insegnanti nella formazione di educatori ambientali.
