Il incombe à l’école de développer les attitudes des enfants à l’égard de l’environnement dans lequel ils vivent, en leur donnant la possibilité d’acquérir des connaissances, des valeurs et des attitudes qui contribueront à améliorer leur qualité de vie. Cet ouvrage traite des pratiques éducatives et des connaissances des élèves en matière de protection de l’environnement, en particulier de la rivière Paquequer à Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro. Le projet a été mené entre 2007 et 2008 à l’école municipale de Chiquinha Rolla et le public cible était les élèves de la cinquième année de l’école primaire, âgés de 9 à 11 ans. Les résultats ont montré un manque de sensibilisation de la part des résidents locaux, des élèves et des membres de la famille à la protection de l’environnement et de leur propre santé, ainsi qu’un manque de préparation de la part des enseignants à la formation d’éducateurs environnementaux.
