O gibão-hoolock numa região crítica da Índia-Birmânia enfrenta inúmeras ameaças. As ameaças incluem a perda de habitat devido à invasão humana, projetos de desenvolvimento e expansão de plantações de chá. Em Assam e Mizoram, os gibões-hoolock são agora encontrados em áreas desconhecidas, como terras privadas em áreas periféricas. Os gibões-hoolock são braquiadores obrigatórios que dependem da densa copa das árvores para explorar o seu nicho de forma ideal. A perda de habitat, na forma de fragmentação, restringiu e isolou as suas populações a pequenas áreas dentro das florestas. Não há informações disponíveis sobre o estado do gibão-hoolock nessas áreas e, por isso, as questões relacionadas à conservação do gibão-hoolock são completamente ignoradas. Assim, há uma grande necessidade de adotar um planeamento adequado e aplicar várias estratégias e táticas de conservação, essenciais para que os gibões possam prosperar num ambiente melhor. A maioria da população local desconhece o estatuto legal do gibão-de-hoolock, o que constitui um grande problema de conservação. Para colmatar a lacuna de conhecimento sobre a espécie, o presente estudo tem como objetivo investigar a distribuição atual e o estado da população dos gibões-de-hoolock ocidentais em Longai, Inner-Line e Kanghmun Village Reserve.
