Este trabalho analisa a interação entre a migração irregular e os direitos humanos, com referência específica às diferentes fases do ciclo migratório. A maioria dos estudos académicos sobre a migração no Gana baseia-se nos migrantes regulares semiqualificados e altamente qualificados, centrando-se no desenvolvimento económico do país (Kleist 2011, 5; 8-11). Este trabalho vem, portanto, trazer à luz a importância das experiências daquela categoria de migrantes irregulares semiqualificados e não qualificados que se aventuram no deserto do Saara e na travessia do mar Mediterrâneo. A análise abrange a forma como as violações dos direitos económicos, sociais e culturais (ESCR) das pessoas as levam a migrar, bem como as violações tanto dos direitos civis e políticos (CPR) como dos direitos económicos, sociais e culturais (ESCR) que acompanham a circulação não regulamentada dos migrantes irregulares. Após apresentar o quadro jurídico, social e político da migração do Gana para a UE, com base em entrevistas a membros da elite, o artigo apresenta análises qualitativas originais de entrevistas a migrantes irregulares que vivem situações diferentes, nomeadamente migrantes repatriados para o Gana; migrantes irregulares instalados em países de trânsito, como a Líbia, e migrantes irregulares instalados em países de destino, como a Itália.
