Questo lavoro esamina l’interazione tra migrazione irregolare e diritti umani, con particolare riferimento alle diverse fasi del ciclo migratorio. La maggior parte degli studi accademici sulla migrazione in Ghana si basa sui migranti regolari semiqualificati e altamente qualificati, concentrandosi sullo sviluppo economico del Paese (Kleist 2011, 5; 8-11). Il presente lavoro mette quindi in luce l’importanza delle esperienze di quella categoria di migranti irregolari semiqualificati e non qualificati che si avventurano nel deserto del Sahara e attraversano il Mar Mediterraneo. L’analisi verte su come le violazioni dei diritti economici, sociali e culturali (ESCR) spingano le persone a migrare, nonché sulle violazioni sia dei diritti civili e politici (CPR) che degli ESCR che accompagnano i movimenti non regolamentati dei migranti irregolari. Dopo aver delineato il quadro giuridico, sociale e politico della migrazione dal Ghana verso l’UE, sulla base di interviste alle élite, il documento presenta analisi qualitative originali di interviste a migranti irregolari che vivono situazioni diverse, ovvero migranti rimpatriati in Ghana; migranti irregolari stabilitisi in paesi di transito come la Libia e migranti irregolari stabilitisi in paesi di destinazione come l’Italia.
