La curcuma è una spezia derivata dai rizomi della Curcuma longa, membro della famiglia dello zenzero (Zingiberaceae). La curcuma è una base della maggior parte dei curry indiani, utilizzata da secoli come spezia e pigmento, come conservante alimentare e per scopi medicinali. Il colore giallo brillante della curcuma deriva principalmente dalla curcumina, un principio curcuminoide. Possiede attività antinfiammatoria, antipiretica, analgesica, antiossidante, antimicrobica, antivirale, antifungina, antiprotazoica, antitumorale, neuroprotettiva, antidepressiva, anticocoagulante, cardioprotettiva, ipolipidica, antiulcera, antispastica, antidiabetica, antiartritica, antimutagena, antifertilità e antiveleno. Presenta un potenziale contro le allergie, l’artrite, il morbo di Alzheimer e altre malattie croniche. È stata anche usata internamente per disturbi epatici e digestivi, insufficienza mestruale e crampi. È ampiamente utilizzata in varie cerimonie religiose e sociali, dalla nascita alla morte, in diverse parti dell’India.
