A Etiópia, com solos e climas diversificados que compreendem várias regiões agroecológicas, oferece amplas oportunidades para o cultivo de uma variedade de culturas hortícolas. A cebola (Allium cepa L.) é considerada uma das culturas hortícolas mais importantes produzidas em grande escala na Etiópia. Esta cultura constitui uma parte significativa da produção agrícola total do país. A expansão da produção de cebola na Etiópia deve-se ao seu aumento como tempero em alimentos de mesa e à sua importante contribuição na promoção da saúde. Embora, na prática, este sistema de produção e a produtividade da cultura não sejam muito avançados nem competitivos a nível continental e mundial, é óbvio que os problemas agrícolas podem ser resolvidos através de trabalhos de investigação. Por conseguinte, esta investigação foi concebida e realizada em Gode, uma das regiões mais adversas (seca e árida) da Etiópia, onde se pratica a agricultura pastoril.
