Cet ouvrage passe en revue l’état de la conservation de la biodiversité, les problèmes, les efforts et les perspectives dans certaines parties des pays de la Corne de l’Afrique, à savoir Djibouti, l’Érythrée, l’Éthiopie et la Somalie. La population humaine en constante augmentation (plus de 100 millions d’habitants) et divers problèmes socio-économiques, environnementaux et culturels sont présentés comme des obstacles à la mise en œuvre de programmes de conservation de la biodiversité dans cette région. Cette région présente divers types d’écosystèmes, tels que des hauts plateaux, des zones afro-alpines, des basses terres, des déserts et des zones côtières, avec une topographie variée et des types de végétation corrélés au niveau des précipitations dans les zones respectives. La biodiversité de la région de la Corne de l’Afrique se caractérise également par un niveau élevé d’endémisme. Deux points chauds de biodiversité, à savoir le point chaud de biodiversité de la Corne de l’Afrique et le point chaud de biodiversité afro-montagnard oriental, se trouvent dans la région. Plus de 1 300 espèces végétales et animales de la région sont répertoriées dans les catégories de la liste rouge de l’UICN. De nombreuses ressources de biodiversité de la région présentent un fort potentiel pour l’utilisation humaine. Cependant, des études détaillées sur les ressources de biodiversité de la région de la Corne de l’Afrique et leur conservation doivent encore être entreprises.
