A procura de novos produtos fitossanitários de origem natural que representem um menor perigo para a saúde humana e o ambiente tornou-se uma necessidade. Os óleos essenciais (OE), produzidos por certas plantas com propriedades antimicrobianas, podem contribuir para o controlo biológico da podridão dos citrinos durante o armazenamento. Isolámos e identificámos seis bactérias patogénicas de citrinos conservados, incluindo E. coli, S. aureus, S. thyphi, S. sonnei, B. cereus, P. aeruginosa e uma estirpe fúngica Trichosporon spp, seguida da atividade antibacteriana e antifúngica de oito óleos essenciais, tais como Thymus vulgaris, Salvia officinalis, Allium sativum, Myrtus communis L, Rosmarinus officinalis, piper nigrum, Carum carvi L e Syzygium aromaticum foi testado por técnicas de contacto direto (o aromatograma) para mostrar uma forte eficácia contra todas as estirpes testadas, uma vez que o OE de tomilho tem o maior poder antifúngico entre os óleos com um diâmetro de zona de inibição de 48 mm e CIM 0. 03(%v/v).
