Une relation interspécifique est l’interaction qui s’établit entre deux ou plusieurs individus d’espèces différentes ; elle peut se manifester au sein de la chaîne alimentaire, dans l’utilisation d’un abri ou lors de la reproduction, occasions durant lesquelles la plante fournit à l’animal : de la nourriture, un abri ou un site de nidification.Dans les forêts tropicales, 90 % des arbres dépendent des animaux pour la dispersion de leurs graines. En comparaison, dans d’autres types de forêts, 50 % des arbres, voire plus, comptent sur le vent pour y parvenir.Ces relations entre plantes et animaux sont bénéfiques pour les deux parties. Certains animaux protègent des espèces végétales contre leurs prédateurs tandis que les plantes leur fournissent un abri. En échange d’un lieu de vie, les fourmis protègent la plante en chassant les prédateurs potentiels dès qu’elles détectent leur présence.Dans le cas spécifique des savanes cubaines peuplées de palmiers jatas, une relation plante-animal tout à fait singulière s’établit entre le jata des chauves-souris et la chauve-souris des jatas. C’est le thème central de cet ouvrage.
