La chauve-souris frugivore à nez court, Cynopterus sphinx, est l’une des chauves-souris frugivores les plus courantes de la famille des Pteropodidae, largement répandue dans tout le sous-continent indien. Cynopterus sphinx présente certaines caractéristiques morphologiques uniques, telles qu’une tête en forme de chien, des narines divergentes, de grands yeux proéminents et des oreilles courtes avec un bord blanc. Chez les mâles, le menton, la partie antérieure des épaules, les côtés de la poitrine, le ventre et les cuisses sont caractérisés par une teinte orange. Chez les femelles, la couleur est généralement brun fauve; le croupion est gris brun avec un ventre gris plus pâle. Les premier et deuxième doigts ont des griffes distinctes, le rostre est court et deux paires d’incisives inférieures et supérieures sont présentes. Le pelage dorsal est brun jaunâtre, le pelage ventral est plus foncé que le pelage dorsal.
