Als je kijkt naar alle verschillende soorten planten die op het land groeien, kunnen ze in een van de vier groepen worden geplaatst. Deze groepen zijn bryofyten, pteridofyten of zaadloze planten, gymnospermen en angiospermen. De meest complexe van deze groepen zijn de bedektzadigen of bloeiende planten. Bryofyten worden ook wel niet-vasculaire planten genoemd omdat ze geen vaatweefsel hebben. De andere drie groepen hebben echt vaatweefsel dat bestaat uit buisjes die ze gebruiken om water, mineralen en suikers van de ene plaats in de plant naar de andere te transporteren. Voorbeelden van bryofyten zijn mossen, hoornkorrels en levermossen. Deze categorie van de plant kan niet erg groot worden omdat het voornamelijk gebruik maakt van eenvoudige verspreiding om water en andere materialen te transporteren.
