Se observarmos todos os diferentes tipos de plantas que crescem na terra, podemos classificá-las num dos quatro grupos. Estes grupos são as briófitas, as pteridófitas ou plantas sem sementes, as gimnospérmicas e as angiospérmicas. O mais complexo destes grupos é o das angiospérmicas ou plantas com flor. As briófitas são também chamadas plantas não vasculares, porque não têm tecido vascular. Os outros três grupos têm tecido vascular verdadeiro, constituído por tubos que utilizam para transportar água, minerais e açúcares de um local para outro no interior da planta. Exemplos de briófitas são os musgos, as hornworts e as liverworts. Esta categoria de plantas não pode crescer muito porque utiliza principalmente a difusão simples para transportar água e outros materiais.
