W świecie akademickim umiejętność pisania jest bardzo ważna. Przynosi korzyści zarówno nauczycielom, jak i studentom, służy jako środek komunikacji, narzędzie oceny i ćwiczenie intelektualne. Wiedza i zrozumienie danej dyscypliny są w dużej mierze prezentowane i cenione za pośrednictwem pisania. Niemniej jednak większość wykładowców prowadzących kursy pisania twierdzi, że ich studenci osiągają słabe wyniki w pisaniu w ramach powierzonych wam projektów wymagających umiejętności pisania. W związku z tym badacz postanowił zbadać umiejętności pisania studentów szkół wyższych. Wcześniejsze badania nie wyczerpały tematu rzeczywistych przyczyn takich problemów. W badaniu stwierdzono, że nowi studenci szkół wyższych, którzy mają słabe przygotowanie w zakresie pisania na niższych poziomach nauczania, nie otrzymują specjalnego wsparcia; praktyczne wdrażanie komentowania prac pisemnych studentów przez wykładowców prowadzących zajęcia z pisania nie jest zadowalające; studenci nie mają jasnego zrozumienia związku między zajęciami z pisania a ich osiągnięciami akademickimi na innych kursach. Wyniki badania są pomocne dla studentów i nauczycieli, począwszy od niższych klas, aż po poziom szkolnictwa wyższego. Stanowią one również wkład dla autorów akademickich i badaczy zajmujących się pisaniem.
