Branża architektury, inżynierii i budownictwa (AEC) została poproszona o ponowne przeanalizowanie procesu zamówień i realizacji budowy w oparciu o raporty Lathama (1994) i Eagana (1998). Wezwania te miały na celu reorganizację procesu budowlanego, który był przedmiotem ostrej krytyki. W odpowiedzi na te sygnały alarmowe rozpoczęto proces przechodzenia na zintegrowaną realizację projektów (IPD) jako nowy model zamówień publicznych, modelowanie informacji o budynkach (BIM) oraz lean construction jako dwa główne kierunki rozwoju procesów. Te trzy paradygmaty mają na celu przezwyciężenie krytyki spowodowanej osłabieniem procesu realizacji, brakiem innowacji, nieosiągnięciem wartości dodanej oraz fragmentarycznym charakterem branży. Rewolucyjna technologia oprogramowania, BIM, odgrywa ważną rolę w pomyślnym wdrożeniu IPD wraz z zasadami lean. Niniejsza książka bada skuteczność istniejących metod realizacji projektów i wskazuje korzyści wynikające z zastosowania BIM.
