The Atlas of Non-marine Molluscs of South-east Scotland shows the distribution of terrestrial and freshwater molluscs throughout the Lothians and the Scottish Borders. It is the culmination of many years’ work in south-east Scotland, bringing together data from field observations, historical literature and museum specimens to give an up-to-date view of the status of non-marine molluscs in this area. Records from the 19th and 20th centuries are used to document changes in distribution over the last two centuries. Maps show the past and present distributions of 132 species, recording the decline of some, and the arrival and spread of others, including several introduced species. Each map is headed by the current scientific name, followed by a list of English and superseded scientific names, as well as an illustration of the species that is described. Text summarises important points deduced from the maps, and provides ecological information for the relevant species. Introductory pages describe and illustrate the various habitats in south-east Scotland, and their suitability, or otherwise, for molluscs. Brief accounts are also given of various species recorded in the past that have long disappeared from the area. The author of the Atlas is a zoologist who has studied molluscs for over 60 years, and has made an intensive study of the fauna of the Lothians and Scottish Borders. He has been a member of the Conchological Society of Great Britain and Ireland since 1973.

Life in cities has distanced human beings from nature and made it difficult to understand the ecology of life dependent on the environment. Ecologists now recognize that the dynamics of populations, communities, and ecosystems are strongly affected by adaptive individual behaviors. Yet until now, we have lacked effective and flexible methods for modeling such dynamics. Traditional ecological models become impractical with the inclusion of behavior, and the optimization approaches of behavioral ecology cannot be use...
