Dio Chrysostom był członkiem Drugiej Sofistyki, ruchu intelektualnego wczesnego okresu imperialnego w świecie grecko-rzymskim. Pomimo swojej nazwy, Druga Sofistyka miała niewiele wspólnego z pierwotną sofistyką z V wieku p.n.e., której członkowie byli pierwszorzędnymi intelektualistami o demokratycznych poglądach ideologicznych. Wręcz przeciwnie, Dio i inni członkowie Drugiej Sofistyki byli raczej drugorzędnymi intelektualistami o dość konformistycznych poglądach. Dio był jednak błyskotliwym retorem i człowiekiem o bardziej humanitarnym nastawieniu do niższych warstw społecznych. W swoim obszernym dorobku, który przetrwał do naszych czasów, wykorzystał swoje cyniczne i stoickie pochodzenie, aby między innymi skonstruować ideologię niewolnictwa i wolności jako duchowych, ezoterycznych stanów umysłu. Dlatego jego dyskursy są mniej interesujące jako źródła historii społecznej. Jego poglądy wpłynęły na ojców chrześcijańskich, pomagając im w tworzeniu teorii społecznej i filozoficznej. Tak więc ta książka może zainteresować osoby, które chciałyby poznać historię idei niewolnictwa, zwłaszcza w I i II wieku naszej ery.
