Dio Chrysostomos foi membro da Segunda Sofística, um movimento intelectual do início do período imperial no mundo greco-romano. Apesar do nome, a Segunda Sofística tinha pouco a ver com a Sofística original do século V a.C., cujos membros eram intelectuais de primeira linha com disposição ideológica democrática. Pelo contrário, Dio e os outros membros da Segunda Sofística eram intelectuais de segunda categoria, com ideias bastante conformistas. Dio, porém, era um brilhante orador e um homem de disposição mais humana para com as classes mais baixas. Na sua volumosa obra que sobreviveu, ele utilizou a sua formação cínica e estoica para, entre outras coisas, construir uma ideologia da escravatura e da liberdade como condições espirituais e esotéricas da mente. Assim, os seus discursos são menos interessantes como fontes de história social. As suas opiniões influenciaram os Padres Cristãos, ajudando-os a construir a sua teoria social e filosófica. Portanto, este livro pode ser interessante para quem deseja informar-se sobre a história da ideia da escravatura, especialmente no primeiro e segundo séculos d.C.
