Com o rápido crescimento e a revolução nas redes sociais, impulsionados pelo fácil acesso à Internet, pelo avanço e pela disponibilidade de dispositivos móveis para o público em geral, o marketing nas redes sociais tornou-se uma forma ilimitada de chegar aos alunos do ensino secundário no Sri Lanka. O crescimento das redes sociais é fenomenal, apoiado pelo avanço tecnológico dos smartphones, por software mais robusto e rápido e pela maior velocidade da Internet. O que antes era alcançado num período relativamente mais longo, utilizando métodos tradicionais e convencionais para chegar aos clientes, tornou-se agora menos eficaz. Apesar de o crescimento e o desenvolvimento das redes sociais serem impulsionados por fatores que apoiam o crescimento e a utilização de dispositivos móveis, bem como o desenvolvimento das TIC, muitas instituições de ensino superior privadas (PHE) no Sri Lanka não estão a aproveitar todo o seu potencial. Existem muitos fatores que contribuem para isso, tais como o know-how, a velocidade a que as redes sociais estão a crescer, as desvantagens de se ter um marketing muito aberto e muitas razões para não utilizar as redes sociais para fins de marketing.
