A cidade de Mariupol é uma das principais cidades industriais da Ucrânia. A elevada concentração de grandes empresas industriais deu origem a graves problemas de poluição do ar, do solo e da água. Estes problemas representam uma ameaça para o bem-estar dos seus cidadãos e um grande obstáculo ao desenvolvimento do turismo e à atração de investimentos estrangeiros. O Consulado Geral da República Federal da Alemanha conseguiu reunir muitas partes interessadas das regiões para elaborar um plano diretor 'Ar limpo para Mariupol'. Os principais objectivos do projeto eram identificar as medidas para melhorar a qualidade do ambiente e reduzir as emissões poluentes e elaborar uma lista de medidas para proteger a população de Mariupol contra as consequências da poluição do ar, do solo e da água. O grupo de peritos conseguiu elaborar cinco domínios de ação: recolher e avaliar informações sobre a poluição do ar com partículas finas e poluentes orgânicos; estabelecer um sistema de monitorização ambiental da contaminação do solo com metais pesados; criar um laboratório de análise ambiental; elaborar e apresentar à comunidade um relatório ambiental; partilhar experiências com outras cidades industriais.
