Mariupol é a principal cidade industrial do leste da Ucrânia. A presença da indústria pesada na cidade levou a uma grave poluição do ar, do solo e da água. Isso representa uma ameaça ao bem-estar dos moradores e é o principal obstáculo para atrair investimentos estrangeiros. O Consulado Geral da República Federal da Alemanha apelou às partes interessadas para que desenvolvessem em conjunto um projeto intitulado Ar puro para Mariupol. Os principais objetivos do projeto eram desenvolver medidas para melhorar a qualidade do ambiente e reduzir as emissões; elaborar uma lista de medidas para proteger a população de Mariupol da poluição do ar, da água e do solo; servir de modelo para o desenvolvimento de projetos semelhantes noutras cidades. Apesar da tensão política, o grupo de peritos desenvolveu cinco áreas de ação: realizar uma análise da poluição do ar por partículas finas, bem como por poluentes orgânicos; criar um sistema de monitorização da poluição do solo por metais pesados; criar um laboratório analítico de proteção ambiental; elaborar e apresentar ao público um relatório ambiental; transferir a experiência para outras cidades.
