La combustione in situ dei residui colturali, praticata dalla maggior parte degli agricoltori dell’India occidentale, deteriora la qualità del suolo e dell’ambiente. I funghi hanno il potenziale per la degradazione della lignocellulosa e possono essere utilizzati per la decomposizione in situ dei residui colturali. Le specie fungine Aspergillus terreus, A. flavus, A. niger e Penicillium janthinellum sono state isolate e valutate in base all’attività degli enzimi lignocellulolitici per il potenziale di degradazione dei residui colturali. A. flavus e A. terreus hanno mostrato una degradazione del 30% dei residui dopo 10 giorni di incubazione e questi funghi non hanno mostrato alcun effetto collaterale sulla crescita del grano in condizioni di campo. La diversità fungina è risultata in aumento con le pratiche di gestione basate sulla CA, le sequenze massime del phylum erano nell’ordine Ascomycota> Basidiomycota> Glomeromycota. Tuttavia, Alternaria, Cercophora ed Epicoccum sono stati i generi fungini più abbondanti. A livello di phylum, l’abbondanza relativa di Ascomycota variava dal 55 al 74%, con la massima dominanza registrata nei sistemi di mais basati su CA (mais-frumento-mungheria) e la minima con il riso-frumento convenzionale, mentre a livello di classi i Sordariomycetes hanno avuto la massima abbondanza, seguiti da Dothideomycetes ed Eurotiomycetes.
