Nieproporcjonalnie duża liczba dziadków sprawujących opiekę to Afroamerykanki. W niniejszym badaniu fenomenologicznym przeanalizowano doświadczenia 8 afroamerykańskich babć sprawujących opiekę w stanie Delaware w zakresie edukacji swoich wnuków w wieku szkolnym. Podstawą teoretyczną była teoria Carter i McGoldricka dotycząca rodzin jako systemów wzajemnie powiązanych oraz teoria Sandsa, Goldberga-Glen, Shina i Robina, zgodnie z którą zmiany w życiu często prowadzą do stresu i konieczności stosowania strategii radzenia sobie. Dane zebrano poprzez pogłębione wywiady i przeanalizowano przy użyciu kodowania otwartego i osiowego w celu ujawnienia wspólnych tematów. Babcie postrzegały siebie jako zastępczych rodziców swoich wnuków i polegały na programach wsparcia, aby pomóc w edukacji swoich wnuków. Zaleca się, aby okręgi szkolne nawiązały relacje z tymi afroamerykańskimi babciami, aby pomóc w edukacji ich wnuków i zapewnić skuteczne i przystępne cenowo usługi.
