A Second Life is a novel written by Alexander, Mrs. and first published in 1885. The story follows the life of a young woman named Isabel Otway, who is forced to marry a man named Edward Gilsland due to financial difficulties in her family. Isabel soon realizes that she does not love Edward and is unhappy in her marriage. She meets a man named Ralph Gowan, who she falls in love with and they begin an affair. However, their relationship is discovered and Isabel is forced to leave her husband and children to live with Ralph in Paris. Years later, Isabel returns to England and discovers that her husband has died and her children are grown. She tries to reconnect with them, but they are resentful of her absence and her relationship with Ralph. Isabel must navigate the complexities of her relationships with her family and her past as she tries to find a second chance at happiness. The novel explores themes of love, marriage, family, and the consequences of one’s actions. It also provides a glimpse into Victorian society and the expectations placed on women during that time period. A Second Life is a compelling story of a woman’s journey to find herself and her place in the world. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
