Este livro trata do efeito dos métodos de ensino baseados nas competências utilizados pelos professores de matemática no ensino da matemática nas escolas secundárias e da sua contribuição para o desempenho dos alunos do ensino secundário em matemática, especialmente nos exames nacionais. O estudo foi realizado na Câmara Municipal de Njombe em escolas secundárias públicas selecionadas. Os participantes foram os diretores das escolas, os professores de matemática e os alunos da terceira e quarta classes. O estudo utilizou o paradigma de investigação pragmática em que foi utilizada uma abordagem mista. Para a recolha de dados, foram utilizados os métodos de discussão em grupo, entrevista, análise documental e questionários. Os dados qualitativos e os dados quantitativos foram recolhidos e analisados, tendo sido utilizados os métodos temático e SPSS, respetivamente. Os resultados do estudo revelaram que o desempenho matemático dos alunos aumentou e que a sua compreensão dos conceitos matemáticos também aumentou, tendo sido observada a aplicação dos conceitos matemáticos pelos alunos em situações da vida real.
